5D Robotics participating in 2012 Robotics Rodeo Highlighting Latest Robotic Technologies
5D Robotics software company will demonstrate rapid, reactive, and biologically inspired behaviors in a number of unmanned robots.
SAN DIEGO – June 21, 2012 – 5D Robotics, Inc., a robotics software company, will be participating at the 2012 Robotics Rodeo, June 20-29 in Fort Benning, Georgia. 5D provides intelligent behaviors that improve the working relationship between humans and robots. The Robotics Rodeo is staged by the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC).
The Robotics Rodeo is an opportunity for scientists and engineers from government and private industry to demonstrate new and innovative unmanned ground systems to the U.S. Army, and research and development communities. 5D Robotics will demonstrate behaviors of several systems varying in size from 15lbs to 4500lbs and will also participate in the counter-IED challenges conducted by TARDEC and the Joint IED Defeat Organization (JIEDDO).
“5D Robotics’ configurable technology is enhanced and improved as a result of rigorous field tests and events such as the Robotics Rodeo,” said David J. Bruemmer, vice president at 5D Robotics. “We see it as a chance to showcase new capabilities and robots, and also as a way to get valuable feedback from our customers so we can continue improving robots’ ability to keep our soldiers safe.”
5D Robotics will demonstrate its autonomous follow capability software on the Macro USA Scorpion Robot. The Scorpion is a 28 pound Small Unmanned Ground Vehicle with a multi-mission capability that can be easily transformed for a variety of reconnaissance and inspection missions. 5D will also demonstrate a variety of autonomous and semi-autonomou capabilities on the small-scale, throwable Macro USA Armadillo.
Both the Scorpion and the Armadillo will be controlled from the AMREL operator control unit running the 5D Intelligent Control Environment software. Demonstrating its cross platform, universal flexibility, the robots will also include arms from RE2, a Pittsburgh-based company providing intelligent solutions for mobile manipulation.
Working with Mesa Robotics, 5D will also demonstrate a heavier robot, the 4500 pound Acer (Armored Combat Engineer Robot), which will show autonomous, long range follow capabilities. The Acer is a unique robot that can provide power and carry equipment for an entire squad. 5D Robotics has won multiple government awards to equip the Acer with hazard detection and neutralization capabilities for landmines and IEDs.
Additionally, 5D Robotics has teamed with DRS and Segway to demonstrate long range follow capabilities on the Segway 440X that enable it to follow and lead soldiers on dismounted routes while looking for hazards. Both the Segway and Acer robots use the DRS Adaptive Mission Payload (AMP) that has been developed in partnership with 5D Robotics. The AMP provides the ability to switch payloads between these different robots in mere moments. Addressing the government’s pressing need for interoperability, the AMP is also the first of its kind to provide plug-and-play mission capabilities across robots of vastly different sizes.
